Harvest Reclaimed Antique
What steps do I need to take to stain reclaimed wood?

I am trying to build a table top from reclaimed barn boards. I want it to look very rustic in the end. It has a fairly rough finish right now, and I would like it to be smooth, but I also don't want to disrupt any of the natural weathering it has by sanding it. Also, What would be a good stain color to give it that antique harvest table look?
Thanks!

If you want to retain the weathered look, you shouldn't sand it- as far as the stain goes that should be tested on a scrap piece to see if it will look as you want it too. Once stained, several coats of polyeurethane will take care of most of the roughness. Also, unfinished wood should be sealed with a sealer before staining.
