Clay Traditional Chinese
Is it an appropriate traditional Chinese gifts for an American girl?

I'm a Chinese girl who gonna to study in US and now deciding to buy a gift for my future dorm mate,a nice American girl who will have her 18th birthday at the end of this month:)
I've thought about some traditional chinese gifts like chinese knot,fragrant wood fan,or colorful peking opera clay statues.
Yet them are all ornaments, useless.(It gonna be Sep,the fan could get away)And seeming them are all generally in US selling in any china town,nothing special.
So it is difficult for me to select an appropriate,meaningful and special gift for her since I know little about American gift traditions,worrying about indeliberately mistake.

Any suggestions on this?(with receiveing experience refer is better:)
If for you,what chinese gifts would be glad to receive?
And whatelse should I notice about birthday gift?

I'm sure she will be glad to recieve any chinese give (after all,its the thought that counts). She will probably think its cute of lovely, and see it as you sharing some of your culture with her. There is no reason as to why you should feel obliged to give her an american gift...give her something meainingful. I'll bet she loves it :)
