Can you answer a question about Buddhism for me?
This is a very obscure question- experts, please assist me.
I heard about a sect of Buddhists who believe in "Flying Buddhas." That is, literally, Buddha statues fly through the air, according to this belief system. Can you please enlighten me- what is this sort of Buddhism called, and how may I learn or read more about it?
It is amusing how people have strong opinions about things they don't know. That is really the end of the arguement - the fact is that people who deny certain things have no way to prove the validity of their conclusion.
There are many stories and first person accounts even in present day about statues doing interesting things. This is nothing out of the ordinary throughout the history of Buddhism in India, Tibet, Mongolia, China, Japan and so forth. I'm not sure about a specific sect of flying Buddhas, but there are many stories in the Tibetan lineage.
The miracles that can be produced only by Hollywood computers and special effects teams, that people ooh and aah over as being make-believe are actually side effects of attaining proficiency in high levels of concentration and certain types of meditation. Flying, walking through walls or on water, transforming into other shapes, putting hands through walls or leaving impressions of bare feet in solid rock, or knowing the minds of others directly, or being able to control objects without touching them and so forth. All of these things are natural side effects of mastering the trainings. People have witnessed it. People have accomplished it.
'Why don't they show people then?' is what people say. To understand why such things are not displayed openly without discretion, we need to look at the situation in the world today. When we consider it carefully, we understand how many problems would arise. Essentially though, the main thing missing is faith developed through logical reasoning and personal experience gained through applying oneself to the instructions.
And that is really the point. Miracle powers are only useful for benefitting others. The whole point of the Buddhist path is to attain permanent freedom from suffering, permanent bliss and complete fulfilment. This is done through training the mind in the teachings, with consistency and determination to achieve the fruits for oneself and others. Whe you really train, you lose interest in miracle powers because you realize that the most important miracle is liberation and enlightenment. People see things when they're ready.
What we need is real wisdom, not more entertainment.
