Your are a salesperson in a rug store that carries inexpensive area ruffs medium-priced area rugs, and very expensive handmade area rugs. How would you determine your customer's price range?
I am a rug maker & exporter from India and often face the same problem when a wholesaler or retailer of rugs comes to my place to buy.
In my experience it is better to show them your stuff first and then discuss the price. A customer who falls in love with a good rug won't settle for a cheap but half as good rug unless he absolutely cannot arrange the money to buy it.
Also, if you ask the customers range beforehand, you miss out the out of budget spending we all do. A customer with a range of USD 3000 to buy rugs can afford to spend 4000 but if he has said 3000 you will not show him rugs of 3000 and miss out on additional 1000 dollars
In short, customer is the king, show him everything you;ve got and then shortlist according to his budget.
