antique steamer trunk, how and should I clean it?
I have a steamer trunk or chest that was reccently handed down to me along with a blanket chest. The steamer trunk looks simular to a pirates chest. The Locks say Pat jul 972 and I have found means it's from july 9th 1872.
The sides are what I assume to be brass plated and the edges are metal painted black with some wood accents.
I have no idea what the potential value is of this type of chest and would hate to effect the value by cleaning it. However it is incredibly dirty from being stored away for 40 years.
The other chest is huge and the sides are black leather which I do not know how to properly clean either.
I am not paying for it to be restored either. If it's value is alot then I wouldlike to hide it away until the kids have grown. If it's not then I would like to clean it and display it.
Any ideas as to what to use to clean old metal, and leather? What are the value of these types of chest?
Chances are that the trunk has some value, and a big chunk of that value will be ruined if you try to clean it. Leave it as is until you have a chance to have it appraised by an antique expert. Almost anything that is old and collectible is worth far more in old dirty condition than it is in clean new condition. If a collector wanted shiny new things it is cheaper just to go buy something new. Good luck. It could be worth a little or a whole lot, you need an expert to find out which.
